When providing the service of color guard at civil or military events the FILI Color Guard wears a uniform based on the 1830-50 period U.S. Militia infantry uniform as depicted in the color plate #566 as published by the Company of Military Historians.  The uniform consists of the shako-type hat, coatee, trousers and shoes.  The bell-crown shako has a red-over-white pom-pom for normal wear and a black pom-pom for funeral details.  The coatee is a wool long-tailed high-wasted jacket common to military use at the time.  The coatee is dark blue in color with white turn-backs.  The officers wear flat epaulettes of proper color for grade, silver for captain and gold for major.  The ranks were up-pointed chevrons commensurate with their appointment, from the first sergeant with six chevrons down to the Guardsman with no chevron.  The trousers are high-wasted button-front trousers of the period.  For the sake of comfort and appearance, the FILI Color Guard does wear modern black low quarter shoes.
